A Q&A With Hargrove Sealcoating on Asphalt Maintenance

If you have an asphalt driveway, you should know that there are many things you can do to maintain it so that it stays in its best shape. From regular cleanings to sealcoating, to asphalt patching, up keeping a paved driveway or parking lot is surprisingly cost-effective. Here, Nashville-area Hargrove Sealcoating answers a few common questions about asphalt maintenance and repair.

Q: What is the most effective way to clean an asphalt driveway?

A: Start by removing leaves, dirt, and debris. To do this, use a push broom, preferably one with stiff bristles, which will help get dirt out of the crevices. Next, you can clean stains, such as oil and bird droppings, with Dawn dishwashing soap or baking soda. Follow this by rising clean with your garden hose or pressure washer.  Finally, have your driveway sealcoated to protect it from damage. Keeping your driveway clean will not only protect it but will ensure that it always looks its very best.

Q: Is sealcoating really necessary?

A: Sealcoating is absolutely necessary and is, fortunately, an affordable way to maintain your driveway or parking lot. Your asphalt surfaces should be sealcoated once every two or three years. Your technician will apply a specially-formulated solution of mineral fillers, dissolved asphalt, oils, and sand over the top of your existing asphalt surface. This is especially important throughout Middle Tennessee as Nashville, Murfreesboro, Columbia, and the surrounding areas have long, hot summer days. Sealcoating blocks UV rays while restoring the integrity of your driveway.

Q: Will sealcoating make my driveway look new?

A: In most cases, sealcoating can restore your driveway to a like-new condition. However, sealcoating cannot cover every imperfection. Large areas of damage, such as potholes or alligator cracks, will need to be repaired before sealcoat is applied.

Q: My driveway has several cracks. How can these be repaired?

A: At Hargrove Sealcoating, we use a patching material that is almost identical to the original asphalt that was put down when your driveway or parking lot was installed. For large cracks or potholes, the material is applied and then compacted with a tool known as a tramper. Medium-sized cracks may be spot-treated to prevent further separation. Small crevices, which are often caused by normal wear and tear, are typically filled during the sealcoating process. If you are unsure about the condition of your asphalt parking lot or driveway, we will be happy to let you know if repairs are needed.

Q: What is edging?

A: Before your asphalt surface is sealcoated, it will be necessary to remove vegetation from the edges. This is known as edging, and it’s essential if you want to keep grass from finding its way through the cracks in your driveway. Edging is a simple DIY project that involves using a manual or power tool to remove approximately two inches of grass from the edge of your driveway. Most hardware stores in Nashville carry edging tools, which look like a flat shovel, starting at around $10. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it.
