Guy Riordan Speaks: Important Steps to Become a Hunter

“I have enjoyed the outdoors for many, many years,” says Guy Riordan. The fervent outdoorsman, who has been featured on television, loves helping others get their start in hunting. Guy Riordan has been asked many times, “How does someone get started as a hunter?” According to the ardent outdoorsman, there are several important steps to take.

“To begin, it’s important to review your home state guidelines when it comes to hunting,” begins Guy Riordan. Every state, according to Guy Riordan, has a department of natural resources or wildlife. “Find that department’s webpage and I guarantee that the state’s guidelines and requirements will be posted,” explains Guy Riordan. On that webpage, says Guy Riordan, a potential hunter will also be able to find information concerning any required hunter safety education courses required by the state.

“Second, obtain a hunting license,” states Guy Riordan. Guy Riordan points out that this process is different for different states. “Some states require certain certificates, identification, educational classes and so-on-so-forth,” explains Guy Riordan. The state department of wildlife/natural resources will explain the process. “I know that some states will allow a hunter an ‘apprentice license’ in which a new hunter can hunt only with an experienced hunter present,” says Guy Riordan.

Thirdly, Guy Riordan states that a hunter needs to know the firearm and the game he or she will be hunting. “First off, understand your weapon, the safe use of it, the limitations of it and the kind of ammunition it takes,” explains Guy Riordan. Then it is important to know the type of game “you are interested in hunting and the type of weapon needed for such a hunt,” adds Guy Riordan. “Education and knowledge is the real power behind the weapon,” says Guy Riordan.

After education, Guy Riordan believes that fourthly a new hunter needs to practice. “Find a local target range, explain to the staff your needs and they can assist,” says Guy Riordan. Some ranges, according to Guy Riordan, have staff that will help teach gun safety, techniques and information concerning a particular local game. “You can read all day, but the only way to become accurate with the firearm is to go practice,” cautions Guy Riordan.

“A final item I would offer new hunters is an encouragement to continue their education,” states Guy Riordan. The Internet is a “wonderful source” of great information concerning safety and game tracking and location, according to Guy Riordan. As well, says Guy Riordan, books and periodicals will offer additional valuable information.

Concluding his thoughts, Guy Riordan offers, “Then, it is time to hunt. I would add that the new hunter needs to understand a valuable concept when out in the field for the first time: Have fun!”
