Aldo Todini in known internationally for his knowledge and skill helping businesses regain control of their operations.  A Business Process Reengineering expert, Aldo Todini has assisted corporations such as Berco Krupps, Continental Group, and Banca Italease identify and correct deficiencies and enhance their technology usage to work more efficiently. Here, Aldo Todini addresses common concerns regarding corporate restructuring and business process reengineering.

Question: What is Business Reprocess Engineering (BPR)?

Aldo Todini: At its core, this is a process that involves digging into a company’s operating procedures to find areas in need of change and creating measures to eliminate the wasteful or inefficient performance.

Question: How long does implementing a BPR plan take?

Aldo Todini: It is a continual process that must become a way of thinking for the company’s management and instilled as a value across all area of the firm.

Question: Does technology play a role in BPR?

Aldo Todini: Technology is vital to any successful BPR campaign. This could mean software programs that track and monitor company-wide performance to the addition of modern equipment that eliminates steps in manufacturing.

Question: If I begin a BPR plan at my company, will I have to fire employees?

Aldo Todini: Sometimes layoffs and eliminating positions are necessary once more efficient processes are identified. However, as a company operates more resourcefully, they may actually have a need to add additional human positions in different areas as demand for their product grows.

Question: Who determines the process strategy?

Aldo Todini: In many industries, third party consultants are called in to evaluate a company’s current way of doing business. This is the best option as it is difficult for staff to look objectively at their own procedures, which they may have helped create.

Question: Is Enterprise Resource Planning software expensive to purchase and maintain?

Aldo Todini: It can be costly but in the long run will pay for itself.

Question: Where did the idea that computers and software should be used to restructure businesses come from?

Aldo Todini: In 1990, an MIT professor named Michael Hammer wrote an article based on research he had done into technology’s promising role in business. In it, he noted that most businesses were not using technology to its maximum potential by only utilizing its ability to track performance. Hammer suggested software could be used to increase performance.

Question: What type of companies use Enterprise Resource Planning software an BPR strategies?

Aldo Todini: Almost every major manufacturing operation implements these tools. Auto manufacturers are very active in monitoring performance and most require their suppliers to commit to operating standards.

Question: How do I know if I meet the standards of potential large customers?

Aldo Todini: A third party auditor may evaluate your business plan from its written state to employee implementation. Most specialize in certain industries and are aware of processes that may work well in your business – and ones that are required by certain certification standards.

Question: Is BPR the same as Lean Manufacturing?

Aldo Todini: It is the process by which lean manufacturing guidelines are created but cutting costs is not the only goal of a well-developed BPR plan, which considers all human, technological, and practical aspects of operating a business.

Aldo Todini began his career at the dawn of Business Process Reengineering and has become an expert in manufacturing and financial services consulting.

Domanda: BPR è uguale a Lean Manufacturing?
